Signals best processed on-device:

• Sensitive personal signals (listening history, keystrokes, health metrics): aggregate locally and send only anonymized or differential-private summaries.
• Low-latency personalization features (recommendation embeddings, caching decisions): compute locally to reduce latency and bandwidth.
• Quality telemetry tied to UX (local crash logs, sensor diagnostics): pre-processed on-device to filter noise and redact PII before upload.
  Signals better centralized:

Requirements & constraints:

• Functional: generate concise, engaging vacation captions for a user’s Photos library.
• Non-functional: low latency for interactive UX, privacy-first (sensitive/personal data), offline capability, scalable cloud fallback, strong safety (no hallucinations, no personal data leakage), user control and transparency.

High-level architecture:

• Client (iPhone): lightweight caption generation pipeline using a distilled multimodal on-device model (quantized Transformer + vision encoder) for common cases; local metadata extractor (EXIF, location, timestamps), privacy classifier, and filter chain.
• Cloud: full-capacity generative model (larger multimodal LLM + vision model) accessed when: user opts in, on-device confidence low, heavy aggregation across many photos needed, or resource constraints.

Lagging indicators: percentage of product decisions informed by analytics, product KPI improvements attributable to analytics-driven changes (e.g., % lift in retention or conversion), reduction in bug/incident recurrence due to analytics, and business impact (revenue or cost saved).
Combine both: faster insights and higher adoption should precede measurable product uplifts and revenue outcomes.

Situation: At my previous company I was the lead AI engineer for a cross-product initiative to deploy a single large language model (LLM) routing platform that would serve customer support chatbots, internal knowledge search, and a new generative marketing assistant.
