1. Profile & reproduce

Monitoring and alerting strategy for production BI pipelines

What to monitor:

• Data freshness: timestamp of last ingested record per source/table/view; job run completion times; SLA vs expected arrival window.
• Volume/throughput: row counts, bytes ingested, partition-level counts, unique key cardinality; compare to historical expected volumes.
• Schema drift: column additions/removals, type changes, nullability changes, unexpected nested structure changes.
• Data quality checks: null/invalid rate, fk/uniqueness violations, aggregates (sum, avg) vs historical.
• Downstream health: dashboard query failures, long query latencies, refresh errors.

Threshold approaches:

• Use static thresholds for hard SLAs (e.g., ingestion must complete within X minutes) and critical limits (e.g., table row count = 0).
• Use baseline/statistical thresholds for variable metrics (volumes, null rates). Implement rolling-window baselines (7/28/90 days) and detect deviations using z-score or percentile bands, seasonality-aware (weekday/weekend, monthly cycles).

Reduce alert fatigue:

Recommendation:

• Automate Process B first. After B is deployed, invest in A next; combined automations free equivalent of ~16 analyst-hours/week and yield strong recurring savings.

Situation: At my last company, the weekly executive sales report was assembled manually by copying data from three systems into an Excel template, reconciling a few fields, and exporting charts.
