Key points & assumptions:

• Cohorts are defined by the week containing a user’s first event (cohort_week).
• Weeks use DATE_TRUNC('week', date); adjust if your SQL dialect uses a different week-start.
• A user with no events in the table is excluded (cannot assign cohort). If you must include signups without events, join against a users table with signup_date.
• Event counts are by week; a user is “retained” in a week if they have >=1 event during that week.
• week_number = 0 corresponds to the cohort_week (should produce retention_rate = 1.0 if counting first-event as activity).
• Timezones, late-arriving events, and duplicate events must be handled upstream if important.
