Design Metrics and Impact Measurement Questions

1. Progressive disclosure

• Why chosen: Reduces cognitive load in complex workflows (e.g., multi-step reports or advanced filter options in a BI tool) by showing basic controls first and advanced options on demand.
• Metrics impacted: Feature adoption of advanced capabilities, task completion rate, time-to-completion for common tasks.
• Quantitative signal: Percentage of users who expand “advanced” panels and then complete the task (expand-to-complete conversion). If expansion rate is high but completion low, the disclosure may be hiding necessary controls; if both low, advanced features may be undiscoverable or unnecessary.

2. Contextual help / inline tips

• Why chosen: Helps users learn data concepts and dashboard interactions without leaving context (useful for non-technical stakeholders interpreting metrics).
• Metrics impacted: Support ticket volume, time-to-insight (time from dashboard open to first meaningful interaction), user satisfaction/CSAT for dashboards.
• Quantitative signal: Change in help-click to successful action conversion (e.g., users who click an inline tip then apply the recommended filter or export). A drop in support tickets plus increased tip-engagement → effective.

3. Modal confirmations for destructive actions

• Why chosen: Prevents accidental data- or configuration-destructive actions (deleting dashboards, overwriting datasets) that have high cost.
• Metrics impacted: Incident rate (data loss events), task friction (drops in conversion if overused), time-to-complete for administrative flows.
• Quantitative signal: Rate of action cancellations after modal shown vs. rate of accidental reversions reported. If cancellations spike but actual error reports fall, modals are doing their job; if cancellations are high and errors unchanged, modals may be causing friction.

Goal: identify why the dashboard’s intended users aren’t adopting it and run experiments to increase sustained usage.

1. Data to collect (quantitative)

• Usage events: page views, unique users, session duration, time to first interaction, dwell time per chart, filter usage, export/downloads, share clicks, embedded link clicks.
• Funnel events: view → interact (filter/click) → save/export → return visit. Track conversion rates and drop-offs.
• User attributes: role, team, manager, tenure, permissions, location, device, access path (email, nav, direct link).
• Performance/UX signals: load time, error rates, rendering failures.
• Cohort history: adoption by cohort (by hire date, team, launch-week).

2. Qualitative signals

• Short in-app survey on first few visits (1–3 questions: “Did this answer your question?” + barrier).
• Targeted user interviews with representative personas (5–8 users each of adopters/non-adopters).
• Support tickets, Slack threads, meeting notes where dashboard should be used.
• Observe users performing tasks (shadowing) to see workflow fit.

3. Analysis approach

• Map user journeys and funnel drop-offs by role and task. Correlate non-adoption with slow load times, missing data, or misaligned metrics.
• Heatmap / click analytics on dashboard to see attention.
• Thematic coding of interview notes to identify top pain points (relevance, trust, discoverability, complexity).

4. A/B tests to run

• Messaging: variable onboarding copy and call-to-action in app nav (explain value, typical questions answered). Measure click-through and activation.
• Layout: simplified vs full layout (reduce charts, prioritize top KPI above the fold). Measure interaction and time-to-first-insight.
• Default filters: set role-specific defaults vs global defaults. Measure conversion to interact and retention.
• Guided tours vs no tour (short walkthrough pop-up). Measure immediate task success and 7/30-day return rate.
• Email nudges: contextual weekly summary vs generic announcement. Measure click and return rates.

5. Success metrics

• Primary: DAU/MAU among intended user group, % of intended users who used dashboard at least once/week.
• Engagement: % users who interact (not just view), average session duration, depth (filters used).
• Task completion: % users who complete a core task (e.g., download report, answer X question) within session.
• Retention: 7-day and 30-day return rates for initial adopters.
• Business impact: reduction in ad-hoc report requests, time-to-decision improvements, stakeholder satisfaction (survey NPS).

6. Timeline & prioritization

• Week 1–2: instrument events, run quick surveys, baseline metrics.
• Week 3–6: run interviews, analyze funnels, launch 2–3 small A/B tests (messaging, layout, default filters).
• Month 2–3: iterate on winners, measure retention and business impact.

Deliverable: prioritized list of root causes (discoverability, data trust, performance, wrong KPIs) with experiments mapped to each cause and clear metrics for success.
