Latency Analysis & Optimization Questions

Understanding and reducing response time across the request path: where latency accumulates (compute, I/O, serialization, network hops, queuing), percentile-based reasoning (p50/p95/p99/p999), tail-latency behavior (why the tail diverges from the median, fan-out amplification across dependencies, hedged/speculative requests and other targeted mitigations), latency budgets and SLOs, and critical-path or distributed-trace span analysis that pinpoints where a request's wall-clock time actually goes. Focuses on end-to-end latency as a measured, engineered property rather than an incidental one. This is distinct from profiling a codebase to find CPU or memory hotspots with flame graphs, sampling, or instrumentation tooling (that is performance-optimization-and-bottleneck-analysis), and distinct from the reactive process of triaging, mitigating, and running the postmortem for a live production incident (that is performance-optimization-and-incident-response).

A Kubernetes deployment is experiencing restarts and increased latency during traffic surges. The liveness probe is configured to run every 10s and performs a complex health check that does some I/O. Diagnose how readiness/liveness probes might cause or exacerbate latency spikes and propose concrete fixes, including probe tuning and alternative patterns.

A set of VMs shows high CPU steal time and periodic latency spikes for tenant services. Propose a multi-layer mitigation plan for noisy-neighbor problems that includes quick host-level measures (cgroups/cpu-shares), scheduler or hypervisor options, and longer-term capacity or placement changes. Explain how you'd measure improvement.

Your distributed cache is experiencing hot keys: 0.1% of keys account for 80% of reads, and latency on those specific keys is climbing while the rest of the cache looks healthy. Given a sample distribution of request counts per key, propose a plan to bring that latency down, explain the trade-offs of your approach, and describe what you would monitor to confirm it actually worked.
