Cultural Fit and Working Style Questions

I structure work to make reviews fast and onboarding predictable by standardizing branches, PRs, tests, notebooks and checklists.

Branch & PR strategy:

• short-lived feature branches named feature/<ticket>-short-desc; one logical change per branch.
• keep PRs ≤ 300–400 lines changed (ideally < 150). If larger, split into an interface-first PR and follow-ups.
• PR description template: problem, data affected, approach, files changed, how to run locally, required infra changes, backward-compatibility notes, and testing instructions.

Tests:

• unit tests for data transforms and utility functions; integration tests for end-to-end pipeline runs on small fixtures.
• CI gates: lint, unit tests, integration smoke test, and blackbox model-score comparison (threshold).
• include deterministic random seeds and small sample datasets checked into repo fixtures.

Notebooks & docs:

• Production notebooks separated from exploratory notebooks. Production notebooks are parameterized (papermill) and minimal, with a README and clear cell tags: "TO RUN", "OUTPUTS", "PLOT".
• Exploratory notebooks live in /notebooks/experiments with a 1-paragraph summary at top and an actions list (what to productionize).

Templates & checklists:

• PR template (as above), notebook README template, model card template (data sources, metrics, caveats).
• Pre-merge checklist: tests pass, data schema unchanged or migration plan, model-card updated, inference contract unchanged.

Example:
A new hire joined and needed to validate a resizing data pipeline. With the branch naming, PR template, and small fixture datasets plus clear integration test, they ran the pipeline locally in under a day, wrote one focused PR with tests and a model card update, and got it reviewed and merged the next day—reducing ramp from an expected week to 2 days.

This reduces reviewer cognitive load, prevents hidden infra surprises, and makes onboarding reproducible.

1. Pre-work (before the meeting)

• Gather context: product goal, target user segment, launch constraints, timeline.
• Pull historical data for candidate metrics: baseline means, variances, daily/weekly distributions, correlation with revenue/retention, seasonality.
• Compute statistical properties: minimal detectable effect (MDE) at realistic sample sizes, required N, metric sensitivity/noise, power curves.
• Prepare visuals: timeseries, histograms, correlation matrix, sample-size vs MDE plot, and a short one-page brief.

2. Invite stakeholders

• Product Manager (decision owner)
• UX/Design (user experience impacts)
• Engineering/QA (implementation feasibility)
• Analytics/BI (measurement reliability)
• Marketing/revenue owners (business impact)
• Legal/Privacy if tracking changes
• One or two data-savvy team members to validate assumptions

3. Facilitation agenda (time-boxed, 45–90 mins)

• Align on experiment objective (5–10 min). Ensure everyone agrees on the primary business question.
• Review candidate metrics and evidence (15–25 min): show baselines, noise, correlations, and how each metric maps to the objective.
• Walk through statistical constraints (10–15 min): sample-size/MDE trade-offs and how metric variance affects experiment duration and cost.
• Decision framework (15–20 min): use a decision matrix with columns — alignment to objective, sensitivity (stat power), implementation complexity, leading vs lagging indicator, business risk. Score metrics together.
• Consensus method: if scores close, use weighted scoring where PM/business impact weight > engineering cost > statistical reliability. If still tied, pick hierarchical primary/secondary metric (sacrifice one short-term for long-term learnings).

4. Data analysis specifics to present

• Historical effectability: show past experiments’ effect sizes on each metric.
• Correlation with ultimate business outcomes (e.g., conversion, LTV).
• Variance and outlier impact; consider transformation (log, trimmed mean) or ratio metrics.
• Segmentation sensitivity: metric stability across cohorts.
• Simulated A/B runs to show expected confidence intervals and time to significance.

5. Documenting the decision

• Create/update an experiment spec that records:
  • Agreed objective and hypothesis
  • Primary metric (with definition, aggregation window, guardrails) and one or two secondary metrics
  • Rationale: evidence from data, scorecard, and trade-offs
  • Statistical plan: test type, significance, power, stopping rules, sample size
  • Implementation notes and owner for instrumentation
  • Dashboards and monitoring plan, and rollback criteria
• Share the spec in the team repo, link to dashboards, and capture the decision in the sprint notes/Confluence with time-stamped approvals from stakeholders.

6. Follow-up

• Validate instrumentation in staging, run sanity checks on metric calculations pre-launch.
• After experiment, run pre-registered analysis and conduct a short postmortem documenting results vs. expectations and updating metric playbook.

This process balances data rigor, business priorities, and practicality, producing a defensible, documented primary metric aligned to the experiment’s objective.

I use a simple, repeatable rubric: Impact × Urgency, Effort, and Risk/Cost. I score each ad-hoc request on:

• Impact: business value (revenue/retention/accuracy improvement) and user reach (1–5)
• Urgency: deadline/SLAs and regulatory need (1–5)
• Effort: engineering + data + validation time (T-shirt: S/M/L)
• Risk/Cost: model degradation, technical debt, or downstream breakage (low/med/high)

I convert scores into a priority recommendation (e.g., high impact & low effort → expedite; low impact & high risk → defer). I communicate trade-offs to stakeholders by sharing the rubric results, an estimated timeline, and what will be delayed if we take the ask (impact on sprint milestones, experiment cadence, or model retrain schedule). I propose mitigations (temporary workaround, phased delivery, or a spike).

Example (Situation/Action/Result): A product manager asked for an ad-hoc dashboard to surface a new cohort’s behavior. It scored medium impact, low effort, low risk, but would delay a planned feature-engineering sprint that targeted a 3% lift in conversion. I presented both options and a hybrid: deliver a minimal dashboard in 2 days (quick win) and postpone a noncritical refactor. The quick dashboard uncovered a data-quality issue causing a 4% undercount; fixing it improved model inputs and ultimately produced a 3.7% lift — better than the original planned work. The transparent rubric and phased approach kept stakeholders aligned and maximized product impact.

Situation: Joining a new data science team at a fintech startup, I aimed to quickly deliver predictive features while aligning to product goals.

Preferred working style / Requirements: I like requirements expressed as outcomes (OKRs or target metrics) plus concrete constraints — target metric (e.g., increase retention by 3%), data sources available, latency/production constraints, and success criteria. If ambiguity exists, I prefer a short discovery session to align assumptions before coding.

Check-in cadence: I prefer a 1:1 with my manager weekly (30 minutes) for status, blockers, and prioritization, plus a brief async update (Slack or short memo) twice a week. For active experiments, I do daily stand-up participation with the team.

Autonomy vs. structure: I lean toward high autonomy to iterate quickly (prototyping models, running experiments) but within defined guardrails: documented data contracts, CI for models, and periodic architecture/code reviews. Autonomy speeds experimentation; structure ensures reproducibility and handoff.

Concrete example (Action & Result): At my last role I was given the objective to reduce churn for a merchant cohort by 5% in a quarter. After a 1-hour kickoff to clarify success criteria and available data, I independently prototyped a survival model, ran A/B targeting, and added a simple feature-store hook for production. Weekly manager check-ins kept priorities aligned. Result: the intervention reduced churn by 6.2% in that cohort and increased ARPU by 2.8%; the pipeline I built cut model-deployment time from 3 weeks to 4 days.

What I’m willing to change: I’ll adapt to whatever cadence and process the team already uses — for example, if the team requires stricter sprint-based planning or daily written updates, I’ll follow those practices to ensure smooth collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Situation: In my data-science work I prioritize reproducibility and fast, low-friction reviews for notebooks and ML pipelines. I standardize etiquette, tooling, and automated checks so reviewers focus on ML correctness and assumptions, not environment noise.

Process & tooling:

• Use git + feature branches, GitHub/GitLab PRs, and pre-commit hooks (black/isort, ruff, nbstripout for notebooks).
• Use DVC or MLflow for data and model versioning; Docker/conda-lock or poetry + lockfile for env reproducibility.
• Prefer modular code in .py modules and lightweight, parameterized notebooks (papermill, nbdev) for experiments.

Checklist for reviewers (short, mandatory):

• Data: dataset version checked (DVC/URI), sample stats and schema validated, no PII leaks.
• Determinism: explicit random seeds for libraries (numpy, torch, tf, python random), and for data shuffling.
• Dependencies: include lockfile and recorded hashes; container + minimal runtime spec.
• Outputs: artifacts stored with versioning; metrics and plots regenerated by CI.
• Tests & docs: unit tests for data transforms, integration tests for pipeline steps, clear README and run command.

CI checks:

• Linting + formatting
• Run unit tests (pytest) and small integration tests with tiny fixture data
• Execute critical pipeline steps (etl, train) on synthetic/sampled data with fixed seed
• Notebook execution tests (nbval or papermill) to ensure cells run end-to-end
• Reproducibility smoke: build container/env, install from lockfile, run seed-based training and assert metric within tolerance
