Job Summary
Hill York seeks a Vice President of Engineering who provides strategic leadership for Hill York's Engineering and Construction (ENCON) department and serves as a key partner to operations, sales, and executive leadership. This role is responsible for leading and developing a team of engineers, designers, BIM professionals, and technical staff while supporting business development, customer engagement, preconstruction activities, design-assist initiatives, value engineering, and major project pursuits. The Vice President of Engineering plays a critical role in helping secure new business opportunities, strengthening customer relationships, providing technical leadership, and driving innovation throughout the project lifecycle. This position supports organizational growth through talent development, succession planning, process improvement, and the advancement of engineering and preconstruction capabilities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead, develop, and mentor the ENCON team, including engineers, designers, BIM professionals, and technical support staff.
- Establish engineering standards, quality control processes, and best practices that support operational excellence.
- Develop succession plans and career development pathways.
- Partner with New Construction sales leadership to support business development efforts, strategic pursuits, and major project opportunities.
- Build and maintain relationships with owners, developers, architects, engineers, general contractors, and other key stakeholders.
- Represent Hill York in customer presentations, interviews, project kickoffs, and technical discussions.
- Lead engineering involvement during conceptual design, budgeting, preconstruction, design-assist, and value engineering activities, including proposal development, qualifications packages, project presentations, and technical content needed to secure work.
- Develop conceptual HVAC and mechanical system solutions that align with customer objectives and project requirements.
- Provide constructability reviews, scope development, technical evaluations, and project development support.
- Provide technical oversight and guidance on complex HVAC, piping, and mechanical systems.
- Support project and operations teams in resolving technical challenges and implementing practical solutions.
- Identify and present alternative systems, materials, and methods that improve value while considering project intent, life cycle cost, energy performance, maintainability, and constructability.
- Champion technology, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance engineering, BIM, fabrication, estimating, and project delivery processes.
- Collaborate with operations, service, estimating, fabrication, and executive leadership teams to support company objectives.
- Participate in strategic planning, workforce planning, budgeting, and organizational development initiatives.
- Support the transfer of technical expertise, customer relationships, and institutional knowledge as part of the company's long-term succession strategy.
- Maintain awareness of applicable codes, design standards, industry trends, and emerging technologies.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline required.
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience within the mechanical contracting, HVAC, engineering, or construction industry.
- Demonstrated success leading engineering, preconstruction, or technical teams while developing and mentoring high-performing professionals.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, piping, and mechanical systems, including design, constructability, project execution, and value engineering principles.
- Experience supporting business development efforts, customer engagement, strategic project pursuits, preconstruction, estimating, and design-assist activities.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with owners, developers, architects, engineers, general contractors, and other key stakeholders.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to align engineering strategies with organizational goals, drive operational improvements, and support company growth.
- Excellent leadership, communication, presentation, negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environment while maintaining sound judgment, focus, responsiveness, and quality under pressure.
- Florida Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, experience within a mechanical contracting organization, experience with BIM and construction technologies, and industry certifications such as LEED or CEM are preferred.
