Requirements Gathering and Scoping Questions
Eliciting, analyzing, and translating stakeholder and user needs into clear, scoped requirements and specifications. Covers cross-functional discovery, distinguishing needs from requests, and writing specs engineering can build against. Assesses the ability to bridge business intent and buildable definition.
Engineering claims a requested feature is infeasible in the timeline; marketing insists it must ship. As the PM, outline a structured approach to re-scope the feature, surface technical constraints, propose alternatives (including incremental approaches), and align stakeholders on a delivery plan.
A mid-project regulatory change requires additional logging and data retention. Describe how you would re-scope the remainder of the work to comply with the change while minimizing schedule impact. Include impact assessment steps, prioritization, and required artifacts for legal sign-off.
Compare three prioritization techniques (RICE, MoSCoW, Value vs Effort). For each, describe a short example of when you would use it during scoping and one downside the team should watch for.
You need to propose a phased rollout plan for a high-risk feature with a firm 6-month deadline. Provide a three-phase scope (MVP, v1, v2) with acceptance criteria, success metrics, and key mitigations to de-risk each phase. Explain how you would negotiate scope if engineering capacity halves.
Explain what a good acceptance criterion looks like for a user story. Convert this vague story into a clear user story with acceptance criteria: 'Users should be able to get notifications for order updates.' Include positive and negative testable cases.
