Common workflows & how I’d organize them

• Structure: Project → Test Suites → Sections (feature/epic) → Test Cases. Use consistent naming, preconditions, clear steps, expected results, and tags (priority, component, automation).
• Mapping: Link each test case to a requirement or Jira user story via the tool’s requirement-link field or by embedding the Jira issue key. Maintain a requirements traceability view to ensure coverage.
• Planning: Create Test Plans for releases and Test Runs (cycles) per environment (staging, prod-smoke). Assign testers, set target builds, and include automated vs manual tags.
• Execution & history: Execute runs, record results (pass/fail/block), add defect links and notes. The tool stores execution history per case — use that to detect flakes and regression trends and to produce reports (pass rate, execution velocity, aging).

CI & Jira integration

• Jira: Use built-in integrations or plugins to display linked test coverage on Stories/EPICs and to create defects from failed tests with auto-populated context.

Difference between UAT and QA test cases

• Purpose

  • QA: Verify the system works according to technical requirements; catch defects early.
  • UAT: Validate the system meets business needs and real-world workflows; obtain stakeholder sign-off.

• Audience & Style

  • QA: Detailed, technical, includes edge cases, data setup, and exact expected values.
  • UAT: High-level, scenario-driven, written in business language, focused on outcomes important to users.

• Scope & Success Criteria

  • QA: Pass when all assertions/steps match spec; often automated.
  • UAT: Pass when business stakeholders confirm the workflow is acceptable and aligns with policy/process.

Approach to preparing UAT cases

• Collaborate with business SMEs to identify critical end-to-end scenarios.
• Use real-world example data and minimal technical setup steps.
• Provide clear acceptance criteria and one-point sign-off per case.
• Include rollback/exception notes for known limitations.

Example UAT Test Case — Claims Submission (Happy Path)

Title: Submit a medical claim and receive confirmation

High-level steps:

1. Log in as Claims Submitter (business user).
2. Create a new claim for Patient A with policy #123, service date 2026-02-15, procedure code X.
3. Attach required documents (invoice, medical notes).
4. Submit claim.

Acceptance criteria (business language):

• After submission, user sees confirmation message "Claim submitted successfully" and a reference number.
• Claim appears in “Submitted Claims” list with status "Pending Review" and correct patient/policy details.
• Attached documents are visible and downloadable.
• No business validation errors (eligibility, duplicate claim) are shown for compliant data.

Situation & goals
Design a living requirements → test traceability matrix (RTM) for a complex, fast-changing feature set that guarantees coverage, supports impact analysis, and preserves historical context when requirements change.

Structure & representation

• Use a relational model (Tool: TestRail/Jira Xray or a simple DB + UI): rows = Requirement ID + version, columns = Test Case ID(s) + type (manual/auto), Mapping Type (validates/depends-on/regression), Status, Owner, Last Exec, Exec History link.
• Represent many-to-many links explicitly: RequirementID:vX ↔ TestID:vY with link metadata (createdBy, createdAt, rationale).

Versioning & storage

• Source-of-truth: requirements stored with immutable version IDs (e.g., REQ-123@v2). Store snapshots of RTM entries in Git or an append-only audit DB. Keep test definitions in a test-repo (Markdown/JSON) with tags matching requirement versions.
• Execution history stored separately and linked to specific RTM mapping to preserve past results even if current test evolves.

Change detection & notifications

• Integrate with requirements tool via webhooks. On requirement change:
  • Auto-run impact analysis (follow links) to produce affected test list.
  • Notify owners via Slack/email/Jira tickets with prioritized list (risk, usage, last-pass).
  • Create maintenance tasks automatically for failing/impacted tests.

Retiring stale tests without losing history

• Quarantine workflow: mark tests as DEPRECATED with reason, last-valid-req, and archival timestamp. Move to an Archive partition (read-only) but retain execution history and mappings to historical requirement versions.
• Periodic cleanup policy: quarterly review with owners; resurrect if requirement reappears else permanently archive after approval.

Governance & automation

• Enforce CI gates: failing impact analysis blocks merges until maint. tasks created.
• Automate mapping suggestions using heuristics (keyword, coverage gaps) and require owner confirmation.
