Deep familiarity with the canonical and influential papers, datasets, benchmarks, and research groups in a particular subfield. Candidates should be able to map the evolution of ideas, identify seminal contributions and their limitations, contrast competing approaches, and articulate important open problems. Interviewers expect the ability to cite representative work, explain experimental evidence, and situate a new contribution within the literature.
