Strong command of the mathematical and statistical tools that underpin research work. Candidates should be comfortable with formal derivations, proofs or sketch proofs, optimization theory, probability and concentration results, linear algebra, and statistical inference. Expect to derive key equations, reason about generalization and sample complexity, explain assumptions behind models, and discuss appropriate statistical tests and experimental design choices to validate claims.
