1. Login/authentication success rate (per minute/hour)
   Why: Failed logins or spikes in auth errors block user access and upgrade flows, directly hurting conversions and increasing churn.
   How to instrument: Track auth success/failure counts and latency in the auth service; emit metrics (e.g., auth.success, auth.failure, auth.latency) to Prometheus with labels (region, client_version). Alert on >3% failure rate sustained 5m or error rate + rising latency.

2. Payment transaction success rate & latency
   Why: Failed or slow payments cause lost revenue and subscription churn.
   How to instrument: Instrument payment gateway calls with success/failure counters and timing histograms; correlate payment failures with payment provider error codes and user cohorts in logs/metrics. Create alerts for drop below SLA (e.g., <98% success) and SLA latency breaches.

3. API error rate for critical product endpoints (4xx/5xx per 1k requests)
   Why: Increasing client-facing errors degrade experience, reduce active usage and renewals.

SLO (Service Level Objective): an internal, measurable target on an SLI that defines acceptable reliability and drives engineering priorities and an error budget. Business meaning: what we aim to deliver and use to decide when to prioritize reliability work.

SLA (Service Level Agreement): a contractual promise to customers about service levels, often with legal/financial penalties if breached. Business meaning: customer-facing commitment with specified remedies.

Concrete examples for a customer-facing payment API:

1. SLI

• Metric name: Payment Authorization Success Rate
• Measurement window: rolling 5-minute and 30-day aggregates
• Threshold: raw metric definition = (successful authorizations / authorization attempts) * 100
• Consequence: used for dashboards/alerts; no immediate contractual action—triggers on-call if 5-minute < 99.5%

2. SLO

• Metric name: Authorization Success Rate SLO
• Measurement window: 30-day rolling window
• Threshold: ≥ 99.95% successful authorizations
• Consequence: if monthly SLO breach consumes error budget, engineering pauses new feature releases and allocates sprint(s) to reliability work until error budget restored

3. SLA

• Metric name: Monthly Authorization Availability (customer contract)
• Measurement window: calendar month
• Threshold: ≥ 99.9% authorizations available (i.e., downtime or failure rate implies availability < 99.9%)
• Consequence: contractual remedy — for each month SLA breached, customer receives service credit equal to 5% of that month’s invoice; repeated breaches may permit customer termination per contract
