SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs — differences and concrete examples for an HTTP JSON user-profile API:

Definitions (short)

• SLI (Service Level Indicator): a measured signal of service behavior (what you can observe).
• SLO (Service Level Objective): a target for an SLI over a time window (internal reliability goal / error budget).
• SLA (Service Level Agreement): a contractual promise to customers, often with penalties for violation.

Concrete examples for the user-profile API

• SLI: "Successful request rate" = percentage of HTTP GET /profiles/{id} responses with 2xx and valid JSON within 200ms, measured per minute; and "p95 latency" = 95th-percentile end-to-end latency for those successful responses.
• SLO: Over 30 days, 99.9% of requests must be successful (as above) AND p95 latency < 200ms for 99% of daily windows. Error budget = 0.1% downtime (~43.2 minutes/month).
• SLA: Public contract: We guarantee 99.9% availability per calendar month; if availability <99.9% we will apply a service credit of 10% of monthly fee.

How each stakeholder uses them

• Engineering (SRE/dev): Use SLIs to detect regressions and power alerts; use SLO/error budget to prioritize reliability vs feature work (pause releases when error budget exhausted); implement instrumentation and runbooks.
• Product: Uses SLOs to set acceptable user experience trade-offs and roadmap priorities (e.g., pay down tech debt to meet p95 target); interprets SLIs for product analytics (feature impact on performance).
• Leadership/Business: Uses SLAs to set contractual commitments and risk/financial exposure; uses aggregated SLO compliance to inform SLAs and investment decisions (budget for capacity, hiring) and communicate expectations to customers.

Why this matters

• SLIs are measurement, SLOs are internal targets and decision-making tools, SLAs are external commitments with legal/financial consequences. Designing clear SLIs and reasonable SLOs lets teams balance velocity and reliability while avoiding costly SLA breaches.

Requirements & constraints:

• 1,000 TPS global (~86M/day) with strict fraud-detection latency (e.g., decision in <50–200 ms).
• Strong availability goal (e.g., 99.99%).
• Data residency / regulatory requirements in some regions.
• Consistent transaction state, low replication lag, secure payments compliance (PCI DSS).

Decision factors (brief):

• Latency: single-region centralization increases RTT for distant users; multi-region reduces user-to-auth latency but adds cross-region consistency challenges.
• Replication lag: asynchronous replication can cause stale reads affecting fraud detection; synchronous cross-region commits increase latency.
• Data residency/regulatory: mandates may force local data stores for certain customers.
• Failover complexity: active-active requires conflict resolution and orchestration; active-passive simpler but slower RTO.
• Cost: multi-region doubles infra/egress/capacity and operational complexity.

Recommended approach:

• Hybrid: regional read/write-active for regional traffic using geo-partitioning (shard by region/currency), backed by a global control plane for cross-region deduplication and global fraud models. Use active-active only for stateless frontends and fraud inference close to users; use regional authoritative ledgers with async replication + strongly consistent reconciliation for settlements. Where regulation forbids cross-border storage, keep authoritative data in-region.

Phased migration plan & tests:
Phase 0 — Prep (2–4 weeks)

• Inventory regulatory requirements, classify flows (time-sensitive vs batch).

Plan outline — 12-month capacity program for a core user-facing service.

1. Inputs & data sources

• Runtime metrics: RPS, concurrent sessions, p50/p95/p99 latency, error rate, CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, GC pause, connection pool usage.
• Business forecasts: product roadmaps, marketing campaigns, customer growth targets, contractual SLAs, expected seasonality (holidays).
• Historical telemetry (last 12–24 months) from Prometheus/Datadog + deployment logs + billing reports.

2. Modeling approach

• Baseline model: compute current 95th-percentile load and resource-per-request (CPU/ms, memory/request) from APM traces.
• Forecasting: time-series trend + seasonality (simple exponential smoothing or Prophet) to project monthly RPS and peak-hour multipliers.
• Capacity calc: required_instances = ceil((projected_peak_RPS * resource_per_request) / instance_capacity).
• Add headroom via two factors: safety factor (1.2–1.5) and SLO-driven buffer tied to error budget (if error budget low → add extra headroom).

3. Headroom & assumptions

• Default 20–50% spare capacity depending on business criticality; for core user service use 30% headroom.

4. Cost trade-offs

5. Autoscaling strategy

• Multi-layer scaling:
  • HPA (pods) on custom metrics: request concurrency, queue length, latency SLO breach signals.
  • Cluster Autoscaler to add/remove nodes.
  • Predictive/scheduled scaling for known events (campaign windows).
  • Cooldowns and min/max bounds; use vertical pod autoscaler for memory/CPU rightsizing.
• Safeguards: scale-up faster than scale-down, cap burst-to-spot pool to avoid sudden evictions.

6. Emergency / spike playbook

7. Operability & cadence

• Automated dashboards: projected vs actual, burn rate vs error budget, cost per QPS.
• Periodic load tests to validate models and runbooks.

Result: predictable availability within SLOs with a cost-aware mix of reserved baseline, autoscaled burst, predictive scaling for known events, and a well-rehearsed emergency playbook.

Metrics, logs, and traces are the three pillars of observability: metrics give aggregated numerical signals over time, logs provide detailed event-level context, and traces show end-to-end request causality across services.

Example for a request that passes through Service A → Service B → Service C:

• Metrics (emit high-cardinality-controlled, time-series):

  • Service A/B/C: request_count, error_rate, p50/p95/p99 latency (in ms)
  • Infrastructure: CPU%, memory%, thread pool usage, queue length
  • Business: user_request_rate, feature_flag_rate

• Logs (structured, correlated with trace and request ids):

  • In each service emit JSON logs with timestamp, level, request_id, trace_id, span_id, user_id, endpoint, input_size, backend_call_results, error stack traces, and timing of sub-steps (e.g., DB query time).

• Metrics alert you: p95 latency for Service A spiked.
