Requirements Traceability and User Acceptance Testing Questions

Overview / Goals
Organize tests so they’re discoverable, traceable to requirements, runnable for CI smoke and scheduled for regression, and easy to maintain across biweekly releases.

Hierarchy / Suites

• Project > Test Plan (per release) > Suites by Module (Module A / B / C).
• Inside each Suite: Feature-level sections (e.g., Auth, Billing), then test cases.

Mapping to requirements

• Each test case includes a Requirement ID field linking to the ticket or requirement in Jira. Use TestRail/Zephyr built-in requirement traceability to generate coverage reports.

Tagging & metadata

• Tags: smoke, regression, flaky, integration, api, ui.
• Priority: P0/P1/P2 in explicit field.
• Automation status: Manual / Automated / Partial + link to automation job.
• Platform: web/mobile/desktop as needed.

Ownership

• Assign owner (QA engineer or SDET) and reviewer fields. Owners responsible for updates and automation of assigned cases.

Lightweight maintenance strategy

• Biweekly “prune & add” cadence aligned to sprint end: before each release run quick audit for new/changed requirements.
• Mark outdated tests as deprecated, move to “Archive” suite.
• Automate runs: smoke suite in CI per PR, nightly regression for automated tests; maintain a short run-time regression subset (P0+smoke) for fast sanity.
• Use a small weekly rotation: each module owner reviews 10 changed tests per sprint.

This structure balances traceability, automation readiness, and low-maintenance upkeep for a mid-sized product.
