High-level architecture:Client services → Audit SDK (non-blocking) → Ingest gateway (REST/Kafka) → Immutable write-ahead store (WORM blob + index) + Verification index (Merkle tree / hash chain) → Query service (search index + cold archive) → Admin/Compliance UI & Export

Core components and responsibilities:1. Audit SDK (library for services)- Synchronous minimal blocking: attach event metadata and push to local buffer.- Asynchronous batching to an ingest gateway (HTTP/gRPC or Kafka) with retry/backoff. Scalability:- Decouple with Kafka and batch writer; scale consumers horizontally.- Partition by tenant/time for parallel writes.- Indexing uses sharded search/columnar stores; cold archive is cheap S3.

Performance / overhead trade-offs:- Low tail latency: SDK non-blocking + gateway async means request path waits only for buffer enqueue (sub-ms).- Slight ingestion delay for final immutability (seconds–minutes), acceptable for compliance.- Cost vs verification: publishing Merkle roots externally increases trust but adds orchestration.

Edge cases & considerations:- Clock skew: use trusted gateway timestamp and record client timestamp for context.- GDPR/Right-to-be-forgotten: maintain policy to delete or redact—must reconcile with immutable requirements (use encryption key destruction for logical deletion and provide legal compliance workflow).- High-volume bursts: backpressure via Kafka retention and adaptive batching.- Multi-region: write local then replicate signed batches; maintain global Merkle chain or per-region with cross-region roots.

Trade-offs:- Full immediate cryptographic verification for every query is expensive; use index for rapid queries and verify only on-demand or for exported evidence.- On-chain anchoring of Merkle roots increases trust but adds cost/delay.

This design gives immutable, tamper-evident logs with minimal runtime overhead, scalable ingestion, fast query paths, and cryptographic proofs for compliance requests.
