2. Prioritize by highest customer-safety/risk score. If truly equal by score, break tie by rollback/mitigation complexity (prefer the bug with a faster, lower-risk mitigation first).
3. Assign roles: one engineer takes primary fix for Bug A, another takes Bug B; a senior/lead acts as coordinator and communicator (pager, release owner).

If only a single small team member is on call:

• Apply divide-and-conquer: one engineer performs an immediate short-term mitigation (feature flag, throttling, circuit-breaker, quick config change) for one bug while the on-call focuses on the other’s fix if that fix is higher-risk or more time-sensitive.
• If both require code fixes, schedule the shorter fix first (fastest to restore customer experience).

Contingency plans if both fixes required simultaneously:

• Gradual mitigation: deploy temporary feature-disable/feature-flag for the less critical service; rate-limit requests; redirect traffic.
• Bring in extra engineers: escalate to on-call rotation leads, request cross-team support, and use a “swarm” model—one engineer on fix, two on mitigation/testing, one on monitoring/communication.
• Staged deployment: Canary the fix to 1–5% traffic, monitor metrics and rollback plan ready.

Operational details:

Situation: On a tight two-week sprint to deliver a customer-facing analytics feature, our product manager asked for a quick performance tweak to meet a demo at the end of week two. With one day left I discovered a large query was timing out in production under load.

Task: I needed to implement a fast fix so the demo wouldn’t fail, but the change had to be low-risk and deployable within hours.

Action:
