Morning routine (8:30–9:30)

• Quick inbox sweep and triage: unblock critical alerts, CI failures, or urgent PR comments.
• Review my daily sprint board (Jira/Trello) and re-prioritize tasks based on blockers, risks, and input from PM/QA.
• Decide which task is most valuable to unblock the team (e.g., finish a blocking bug vs. start a new feature).

Deep work block (9:30–12:30)

• 3-hour uninterrupted coding/design window reserved in my calendar. I turn off chat notifications and set “focus” status.
• Primary activities: implementing feature, writing unit/integration tests, or completing a design doc for a complex change.
• I break tasks into 60–90 minute sub-goals and commit to shipping a small, testable piece each block.

Lunch / async catch-up (12:30–13:15)

• Read RFCs, review design notes, answer non-urgent messages.

Meetings & collaboration (13:15–15:00)

• 30–45 minute standup + 1–2 cross-functional syncs (PM for clarifications, designer for UX edge cases).
• I keep meetings time-boxed, bring specific questions, and leave with action items to avoid scope creep.

Code reviews & mentorship (15:00–16:30)

• Review 3–5 PRs focusing on correctness, API design, and maintainability; leave constructive, specific comments.
• Pair with junior engineers for 1:1 mentoring or pairing on tricky bugs.

Wrap-up & learning (16:30–17:30)

• Finish small tasks, update tickets with notes, push follow-up PRs.
• 20–30 minutes for learning: read technical blogs, experiment with a new library, or improve failing tests.

How I prioritize & protect deep work

• Prioritization: impact × urgency × risk. I push low-impact meetings to afternoons and batch reviews to dedicated windows.
• Protect deep work: block recurring focus slots, communicate availability on Slack, and negotiate “no-meeting mornings” with my team.
• Decision-making: when trade-offs arise (speed vs. correctness), I favor incremental, reversible changes with tests and feature flags.

Result

• This rhythm balances delivery velocity, code quality, and continuous learning while minimizing context switching and ensuring predictable progress.

Situation: At my previous role building a mobile feature that let users share annotated screenshots, PMs wanted to ship quickly by adding backend support and a generic image editor component.

Task: As the engineer owning the feature, I needed to balance time-to-market with delivering a delightfully simple, Apple-quality experience that minimized user friction.

Action:

• I pushed for a short design spike and brought the product designer and myself together for two sessions before coding.
• We sketched flows, defined the minimal gesture set (tap-to-annotate, undo with two-finger tap), and created a lightweight prototype in Sketch/Framer to validate discoverability.
• I translated those decisions into clear API contracts (annotation model, undo stack) so engineering work would be focused and testable.
• I argued against a generic editor that required more taps and complex settings; instead we scoped a focused editor optimized for the top 3 use cases.

Trade-offs:

• Upfront time cost: two extra design sessions + prototype (about 3–4 days) delayed initial engineering by one sprint.
• Benefit: reduced scope complexity and fewer integration unknowns; slightly higher short-term design investment for simpler code and better UX.

Result:

• The shipped feature required 30% less onboarding help text, had 40% fewer support tickets, and increased shares-per-user by 22% in A/B testing.
• Engineering effort after design was more predictable; code was smaller, easier to test, and aligned with the intended user behavior.
