What to observe:

• How candidate elicits info, listens to provided answers, adapts plan
• Use of stepwise reasoning and clarifying follow-ups
• Clarity when explaining root cause and fix
  Scoring:
  1: Talks over interviewer, ignores answers, gives vague or wrong fix.
  3: Some back-and-forth, arrives at plausible fix but with unclear explanation.
  5: Systematic questioning, integrates interviewer input, explains root cause and a clear, minimal fix and test.

Task 3 — Technical Handoff Note (6–8 min)
Instructions: “Write a 4–6 sentence handoff note to another engineer describing a new API endpoint (purpose, inputs/outputs, constraints). You have 5 minutes.”
What to observe:

• Clarity, completeness, anticipatory info (error codes, rate limits)
• Organization and tone (actionable, unambiguous)
  Scoring:
  1: Unclear note; missing inputs/outputs or constraints.
  3: Functional note but lacks important constraints or actionable items.
  5: Precise, structured note including purpose, exact inputs/outputs, edge cases and testing hints.

Overall scoring guidance: average the three task scores; >=4 indicates strong active listening and communication appropriate for collaborative engineering; 3–3.9 usable with coaching; <3 requires improvement.

Framework overview (elevator pitch)

• Translate technical debt (TD) into business terms: risk, cost, and opportunity cost. Present a short decision framework: Impact x Likelihood x Time-to-fix -> Prioritize; map to feature trade-offs.

Key metrics to present

• Mean Time to Recover / Restore (MTTR) impact: additional hours per incident attributable to TD
• Defect rate delta: bugs per KLOC or per release vs baseline
• Cycle time impact: increased story lead time (days) caused by TD
• Change failure rate and rollback frequency

• Be specific and actionable: point to lines, suggest fixes, explain why.
• Use questions and “I” statements: “I’m worried about…” or “Could we…?”
• Separate style from substance: label nitpicks as “nit” and major issues clearly.
• Offer help: propose code snippets or volunteer to pair on the change.

Example rewrites:
