Sample Answer

Situation: On a backend service written in Java that processed user-uploaded images, we started seeing OOM errors in production after a week of uptime. Heap size kept growing and GC pauses increased, causing degraded latency.

Task: I needed to identify whether it was a true memory leak or just a retention pattern, find the root cause, and fix it with minimal downtime.

Action:- I first collected heap dumps from a staging replica with similar load using jmap and enabled verbose GC logs to correlate allocation patterns.- I loaded the heap dumps into VisualVM and MAT (Eclipse Memory Analyzer). VisualVM showed steadily increasing retained set size; MAT’s dominator tree and “Leak Suspects” report pointed to large retained memory in a cache-like structure: an in-memory Map keyed by user session IDs.- To confirm, I added allocation sampling with async-profiler and used async-profiler’s flame graphs to see allocation call sites—allocations originated from a custom image-processing pipeline that stored intermediate BufferedImage objects into the Map but only removed them on successful downstream processing. Failures and timeouts left entries lingering.- Root cause: incomplete cleanup on error paths and no TTL policy on the Map; plus use of strong references preventing GC.- Remediation: replaced the Map with Caffeine cache configured with maximum size and expireAfterAccess, added finally blocks to ensure cleanup on all error/timeout paths, and changed large objects to use weaker lifecycles (allowing dereference sooner). I also added metrics (cache size, eviction rate) and alerts.- Deployed the fix to staging, validated with load tests and heap snapshots showing stable heap and normal GC behavior, then rolled out to production during a maintenance window.

Result: Heap stabilized (no OOMs), 90% reduction in peak retained memory for that service, and GC pause times dropped. Lessons: always design caches with eviction, ensure error paths clean up resources, and use heap analysis + allocation profiling together to pinpoint leaks.
