Encryption-in-transit vs encryption-at-rest

• Encryption-in-transit: protects data while moving between clients, app servers, databases (TLS, mTLS, SSH). As sysadmin, enforce TLS versions, cert rotation, and network segmentation.
• Encryption-at-rest: protects stored data (disk, DB fields, backups). Use full-disk encryption (LUKS, BitLocker), filesystem-level, or application/DB-level column encryption for sensitive fields.

Key management options

• Cloud KMS (AWS KMS, GCP KMS, Azure Key Vault): managed, integrates with IAM, automated audit logs.
• HSM (cloud HSM or on-prem HSM): hardware-backed root of trust for high-assurance keys.
• Vault (HashiCorp Vault): secrets lifecycle, dynamic creds, transit engine; can use HSM as seal.

Key rotation strategies

• Automated rotation windows (e.g., 90 days) for data-encryption keys; rotate Data Encryption Keys (DEKs) frequently and re-wrap with Key Encryption Keys (KEKs) to avoid re-encrypting large datasets.
• Staged rotation: generate new KEK, re-wrap DEKs, then retire old KEK after verification.

Access controls to keys

• Principle of least privilege via IAM/policies, RBAC, ABAC.

High-level architecture

Database replication approach

DNS failover & health checks

Handling in‑flight transactions

Network bandwidth needs

• Estimate using change-rate formula:
  • required_bandwidth ≈ (avg_change_rate_bytes_per_minute / 60) * safety_factor
• Example: 50 MB/min → ≈ 0.67 MB/s ≈ 5.4 Mbps. With peaks and overhead use 50–100 Mbps dedicated link for comfort and log shipping; enable compression and WAN acceleration.
• For initial seeding or large failover, need burst capacity (multi-Gbps or ship seed).

Cost & trade-offs

• Synchronous cross‑site replication (zero RPO) is costly and latency-sensitive — not feasible cross‑WAN.
• Asynchronous log-shipping + frequent checkpoints meets RPO15 at moderate cost.
• ASR + Azure VMs incur compute and storage standby costs; cold standby reduces cost but increases RTO.
• Active/passive in Azure + read-only replicas reduces RTO but increases ongoing costs.
• Use automation to test failover regularly (DR run costs) — include runbook and engineers’ time.

Operational recommendations

• Regular DR drills, failover/failback playbooks, monitoring, and SLA-runbook owners.
• Test in-flight transaction replay and application idempotency.
• Monitor replication lag, network utilization, and storage snapshot health.

Overview

CPU

Notes on collection/visualization

  • Policy bundles linked to sites/domains/OUs to enforce settings (security, software installs, scripts).

Authentication flow (user logs into domain-joined Windows workstation)

1. User enters domain\username and password.
2. Workstation checks cached creds; if online, contacts nearest DC (via DNS SRV lookup).
3. Kerberos: Workstation requests TGT from KDC on DC (AS request) using username/password to prove identity.
4. DC issues TGT if credentials valid. Workstation requests service ticket for the target (e.g., CIFS, LDAP) as needed.
5. With tickets, workstation accesses network resources; Kerberos provides mutual authentication. If Kerberos fails, NTLM may be used as fallback.
6. Group Policy: After logon, computer then user GPOs are applied from SYSVOL/Netlogon; client contacts DC to download and process policy.

Operational notes

Situation & Goals
Migrate 500 VMs from vSphere to KVM/QEMU with minimal downtime and zero data loss. My plan minimizes risk via discovery, staged conversion, testing, and clear rollback.

Discovery & Mapping

• Inventory VMs (vCenter API/PowerCLI): OS, CPU/RAM, disk types (thin/thick), snapshots, IPs, NIC types, VMware Tools, applications, dependencies, RPO/RTO.
• Classify by criticality & OS (Windows/Linux), storage backend (VMFS, NFS), network VLANs, and unique hardware IDs.
• Produce migration matrix mapping source VM -> target host/pool, storage class, VLAN, and required downtime window.

Conversion Tooling

• Prefer virt-v2v for Linux/Windows VMs; use OVF/OVA export for complex appliances.

• If conversion fails, power on source VM; use DNS switch or VIP rollback to revert clients.
• Maintain final incremental sync data for reattempts; if storage corrupted, restore from backups (tested beforehand).
• Document automated rollback playbooks (PowerCLI and libvirt commands) and execute pre-approved escalation.
