I’d build a 3-year Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) comparing: (A) Full versioning program (6 months, cost = X upfront) vs (B) Quick fix (3 months, cost = 0.5X assumed) plus recurring rework each year. Present net present value (NPV) and break-even.

Assumptions (explicit)

• X = engineering cost for 6‑month program. Quick fix cost = 0.5 X (replaceable).
• Annual rework cost if quick fix chosen = R in year 1, growing by g% per year (workload & compounding tech debt).
• Discount rate = d (e.g., 10% annual). Time 0 = today; program cost paid upfront at t=0.5 years for 6‑month; quick fix at t=0.25. Rework occurs at year ends.

Model (formulas)
Upfront: program cost paid at t = 0.5:

Cost_A = X / (1 + d)^(0.5)

Quick fix + rework:

Cost_B = (0.5 X) / (1 + d)^(0.25) + sum_{t=1..3} (R * (1+g)^(t-1)) / (1+d)^t

Compare Delta = Cost_B - Cost_A. If Delta > 0, versioning is cheaper (avoids costs).

Rationale

Data / Estimates I’d collect

• Bug: number of prospects/customers affected, percentage of onboarding flows blocked, estimated MRR/ARR stalled per week, business SLA/penalty risk, repro steps, estimated dev + QA hours, rollback/risk complexity, hotfix vs. normal release effort.
• Paid feature: expected uplift in conversion or ARPU, total addressable customers for the feature, sales pipeline value tied to the feature, estimated dev + QA + docs hours, time-to-market, dependencies, go-to-market readiness.
• Tooling: current build time and reduction expected, developer hours saved/week, number of devs impacted, conversion to velocity (stories/week), estimated implementation time, risk to CI stability.

Decision process

• Compare impact per engineering hour (ARR or blocked customers per dev-hour), urgent risk, and sprint capacity. If bug fix is small (<1–2 dev days) ship it immediately; if very large, consider an emergency patch or alternative workaround while prioritizing paid feature if it unlocks significant ARR in sprint.

Interpretation & recommendation

Situation & Task
