Final decision: balance client upgrade patterns, SDKs, deployment cost, and expected change cadence. For platform APIs I prefer path-versioning for majors + SemVer for releases, with feature flags for gradual rollouts.

Definition & Goal
Measure how many developers continue to use the public API over time and which product changes increase long-term active integration and value.

Key retention metrics

• D1 / D7 / D30 retention: percent of new developer accounts (or API keys) that make at least one successful API call on day 1/7/30.
• Rolling WAU/MAU (7/30-day active developers): unique devs who issued ≥1 successful call in window.
• Stickiness = WAU / MAU.
• LTV proxy: average requests per active dev * revenue per request (if monetized).

Cohort analysis methodology

• Create cohorts by acquisition date, signup channel, onboarding flow, or version of SDK.
