Usability Evaluation: Principles, Heuristics, and Testing Questions
Judging whether an interface is usable, both analytically and empirically. Covers the foundational rules of usable interfaces (Nielsen's heuristics, affordances, feedback and system-status visibility, error prevention, consistency, cognitive load) applied through heuristic evaluation, plus moderated and unmoderated usability tests, task-based protocols, and A/B and preference testing. Includes when to test, writing tasks that avoid leading users, interpreting findings, and validating a solution before and after launch. Distinct from generative research in that it measures an existing design against usability criteria.
Describe when to use low-fidelity versus high-fidelity prototypes in usability testing. Provide two concrete examples of questions each fidelity answers, and explain trade-offs in time, participant behavior, and types of insights collected.
Describe the System Usability Scale (SUS): what it measures, how raw scores are converted to the 0-100 scale, typical thresholds for interpreting scores (good/fair/poor), and one limitation of relying solely on SUS to evaluate a prototype.
As a design researcher, explain the difference between formative and summative usability testing. For each approach, describe: when in the product lifecycle you would run it, the primary objective, one concrete example study, one advantage, and one key limitation.
Explain the think-aloud protocol: define it, list when it's most useful in usability research, describe benefits and limitations, and explain how you would encourage participants to verbalize their thoughts without leading or biasing them.
Explain what usability testing is and describe the differences between moderated and unmoderated usability testing for a mobile consumer app. Include typical pros and cons of each approach, the kinds of insights each method produces, and two concrete scenarios when you would choose moderated over unmoderated and vice versa.
