Answer (UX Designer handoff to engineering)

Goal & success metrics

• Reduce Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) to < 0.05 page-wide; no individual feed card shift > 0.01 after initial paint.
• Acceptance: automated CLS measurement in CI + manual QA on mobile/desktop.

Skeletons & placeholders

• Provide Figma components for skeleton states that exactly match final content geometry (same padding, typography line-heights, icon sizes).
• Use subtle animated shimmer (opacity transform only) — note in spec to avoid layout-changing CSS (no height/width changes during animation).

Image aspect-ratio & sizing

• Specify fixed aspect-ratio containers per content type (e.g., hero image 16:9, inline image 4:3, video poster 16:9).
• Provide design tokens: aspect-ratio: 16/9; min-height ratios for narrow cards.
• Annotate Figma frames with pixel and responsive breakpoints and recommended srcset candidate widths.

Lazy-loading rules

• Lazy-load only offscreen media; preload above-the-fold key images.
• Threshold: start loading when media is within 300px of viewport (intersection observer rootMargin).
• For inline video, defer poster until within 500px; avoid inserting nodes that change layout when media loads.

Placeholder sizing & replacement

• Use LQIP or blurred placeholder images sized to same aspect-ratio container; replace via opacity fade (transform/opacity only).
• Reserve ad slots with explicit responsive height formulas or maximum aspect-ratio to prevent later injection shifts; include behavior for failed ads (display neutral placeholder of same size).

Handoff artifacts

• Figma component library + tokens (aspect ratios, spacing), annotated CSS snippets (padding-top aspect-ratio trick), QA checklist (CLS targets, test paths), and example network/viewport scenarios.

This spec balances visual fidelity and performance to eliminate unexpected reflows while keeping the feed interactive.

Why Storybook helps handoff

Storybook centralizes interactive, coded components alongside visual specs so engineers and designers reference the same artifact. For a UX Designer this reduces ambiguity, speeds implementation, and makes QA deterministic.

Required metadata designers should provide

• Component name, semantic role, and intent (when to use)
• Figma link + version and token mapping (colors, spacing, type)
• Accessibility notes (aria roles, focus order, contrast targets)
• Responsiveness rules (breakpoints, adaptive behaviors)

Props / API documentation to include

• Prop name, type, default, allowed values
• Effect of prop on visuals/behavior (e.g., size="sm" -> 32px height)
• Required vs optional
• Controlled vs uncontrolled behavior

Visual examples & states

• Canonical examples: default, primary, secondary, disabled
• Interaction states: hover, focus, active, loading, error
• Edge cases: long text, RTL, zero/large data
• Animated micro-interactions (GIF or live story)

Acceptance criteria

• Pixel/fidelity tolerances or token mappings
• Accessibility pass: keyboard support, ARIA, contrast thresholds
• Behavior: expected transitions, disabled behavior, error handling
• Unit/integration checklist: story exists, knobs/controls documented, tests linked

Provide these in Storybook as stories, knobs/controls, MDX docs and links back to Figma — then Storybook becomes the single source of truth for both design and engineering.

Overview
As a UX Designer handing off a new interactive component, I include a concise set of artifacts so engineers can implement it reliably, accessibly, and consistently.

Artifacts (why it matters → minimum content)

• Design spec / component sheet

  • Why: Single source of truth for behavior and visuals.
  • Must contain: Visuals (states), measurements, spacing, tokens references (color, typography), intent.

• Interactive states & flows

  • Why: Captures dynamic behavior and edge states.
  • Must contain: Idle, hover, focus, active, disabled, loading, error; transition timings and easing.

• Props / API contract

  • Why: Clarifies how component is configured and used.
  • Must contain: Prop names, types, defaults, required/optional, examples.

• Design tokens mapping

  • Why: Ensures consistent theming across platforms.
  • Must contain: Token keys and values, fallback rules, usage examples.

• Accessibility notes

  • Why: Prevents regressions and ensures inclusive UX.
  • Must contain: Roles, aria attributes, keyboard behavior, focus order, contrast checks, screen-reader examples.

• Exports & assets

  • Why: Provides ready assets and naming conventions.
  • Must contain: Icon/svg exports (optimized), file names, responsive variants.

• Interaction prototype & acceptance criteria

  • Why: Demonstrates expected behavior and testable outcomes.
  • Must contain: Click paths, sample data, edge cases, performance constraints, unit/integration acceptance checks.

• Code snippets / usage examples (optional but helpful)

  • Why: Speeds dev integration.
  • Must contain: Example markup, CSS/token usage, pseudo props.

Concise Joint Design & Code Review Checklist

Feasibility

• Does the design map cleanly to existing components/APIs?
• Are implementation constraints (platform, browser) noted?
• Fallback plan if platform feature unavailable.

Performance Impact

• Will animations or assets affect render/paint? (FPS, bundle size)
• Lazy-load or debounce opportunities identified.
• Memory or network heavy operations flagged.

Accessibility

• Semantic structure, ARIA roles, focus order verified.
• Color contrast, scalable type, keyboard/voice navigation covered.
• Screen-reader behavior for dynamic content documented.

Error States & Edge Cases

• Empty, loading, timed-out, and permission-denied states designed.
• Internationalization, long text, and extreme input cases handled.
• Recoverability and user messaging for failures present.

Test Coverage

• Unit, integration, visual (snapshot/regression) tests required.
• UX acceptance criteria and user-flows for manual QA listed.
• Accessibility tests (axe/Pa11y) and device matrix specified.

Deployment Considerations

• Feature flags, rollout plan, metrics/events for monitoring.
• Migration or backward-compatibility risks noted.
• Rollback criteria and owner/contacts documented.

How designers & engineers should use it during PR reviews

• Add checklist as PR template section; reviewers mark items as Pass/Fail/NA.
• Designer reviews for visual/UX/accessibility; engineer reviews feasibility/perf/tests.
• Discuss unresolved items in PR comments and tag owners for action.

Tracking issues raised

• Create issue tickets for any Fail items with: checklist item, impact, screenshots, repro steps, and owner.
• Link issues to the PR and use labels (design-review, accessibility, perf).
• Track status via board column (Blocked / In Progress / Verified) and close only after PR re-review and QA sign-off.

As a UX Designer I drive the accessibility, error-state, and UX-acceptance portions, and collaborate with engineers to ensure feasibility, performance, and deployability are validated before merge.

Situation & approach (brief)
I verify visual implementation by combining pixel-aware QA, accessibility checks, and interaction validation. I treat verification as collaborative: design → QA → engineering feedback loop.

Verification checklist (pre-release QA)

• Visual: spacing, alignment, typography, color/contrast, iconography, imagery, responsive breakpoints
• Interaction: hover/focus states, animations timing, microcopy, error states
• Accessibility: color contrast, keyboard order, ARIA labels, tabindex
• Assets: correct export sizes, SVGs vs raster, retina assets
• Tools: Figma spec vs implemented CSS, a11y linters, Percy/Chromatic visual diffs

Post-release monitoring

• Run visual-regression snapshots on critical flows; compare device/emulator screenshots; gather user-reported UI bugs.

Recording mismatches

• Log in Jira with: screenshots (design + implementation overlay), viewport, steps to reproduce, severity, suggested fix, owner tag. Link Figma frame and CSS snapshot.

Prioritization with engineering

• Triage by impact (usability/blocker, accessibility, visual polish), frequency, and release risk. Critical/accessibility bugs = P0/P1; layout breaks on major flows = P1; minor spacing or cosmetic = P3.

Thresholds for deviation

• Accept up to 2px for spacing/positioning in responsive snapshots when caused by rendering differences; color deviation must be <2 delta E. Anything beyond or impacting UX/brand/accessibility requires rework.
