Position Status:             Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary: The Staff Accountant supports the Finance and Accounting Department by performing routine accounting tasks and maintaining accurate financial records. This role assists with daily accounting operations, reconciliations, and reporting while developing a working knowledge of banking regulations, accounting systems, and internal processes.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with general and cost accounting functions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of general ledger activity, reconciliations, daily ledgers, and related journal entries.
  • Coordinate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities under the direction of the Controller. This includes balance sheet and income statement reporting.
  • Perform routine reconciliations of bank accounts, general ledger accounts, and other assigned accounts.
  • Prepare and assist with periodic regulatory reporting of Call Report and others as assigned by management.
  • Verify deposits and assist in resolving routine inquiries.
  • Process accounts receivable transactions, including invoice coding, data entry, and payment processing.
  • Process accounts payable transactions, including invoice coding, data entry, and payment processing ensuring proper approvals are obtained.
  • Assist with both accounts receivable and accounts payable invoice systems and processes to support customer and vendor setup and maintenance.
  • Support internal and external audits by gathering documentation and responding to basic audit requests.
  • Assist with preparing administrative and financial reports as requested by management.
  • Assist with accounting system maintenance and coordination with software vendors, as needed.
  • Perform administrative functions such as receiving, processing, and filing incoming telephone traffic, inter-office items, and external mail.
  • Participate in projects and research to support process improvements and operational efficiency.
  • Satisfactorily complete all required compliance bank training and comply with all regulations which apply within the scope of the position.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.

Experience: 2-5 years of accounting, bookkeeping, finance, or related administrative experience preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Foundational knowledge of general and cost accounting principles and practices.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to follow procedures and meet deadlines with supervision.
  • Proficiency in banking software and Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn accounting systems.

Work Environment

  • Work environment is indoors in a clean atmosphere with normal noise levels.
  • Standard business hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday with occasional extended hours for projects or audits.
  • Exposed to potentially hazardous condition—robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to follow and minimize the risk.

Essential Functions:

  • Critical sensory abilities are seeing, hearing/listening, touching, and speaking.
  • Mental effort requirements include reading, writing, basic arithmetic, mathematics, visualizing conclusions, analyzing data, searching for solutions, creating methodologies, conducting research, and managing resources.
  • Physical dexterity requirements include operating general office equipment such as telephone, computer, calculator, photocopier, and postage Physical ability to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Physical requirements include standing for long periods when providing customer service, sitting, walking, and must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. waist high and 20 lbs. shoulder high.

Travel Requirements:

  • I understand that even though my primary work assignment will be in Livingston; I agree to go to any other location requested by management. I understand that such temporary re-assignment will require the use of my personal If I am requested to spend the entire day at a non-primary location, American Bank will pay for my time spent traveling which is inclusive from the time I leave my home to the time I return to my home. In addition, any time that I use my personal vehicle in such travel, I understand that American Bank will reimburse my mileage at the current designated IRS mileage reimbursement rate.

Pay Grade: 11
