Summary

Baylor College of Medicine’s Center for Educational Outreach (CEO),which is part of the Huffington Department of Education, Innovation and Technology (HDEIT), seeks a science educator to serve as a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Specialist at the health sciences magnet program at the Baylor College of Medicine BioTech Academy at Rusk Middle School (BCMBAR). BCMBAR, operated by the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), is a magnet school program focused on STEM and health/biomedical sciences.

Job Duties

  • Plans, implements, and oversees education programs and activities.
  • Provides content development support for programs and activities.
  • Assists with strategic planning initiatives and process improvement efforts.
  • Assists with the day-to-day operations of an education program.
  • Serves as an educational liaison among BCMBAR personnel, HISD administrators and BCM faculty, students, and trainees.
  • Coordinates lectures, workshops, meetings, seminars, training activities, ceremonies, or events.
  • Creates, monitors, and tracks documentation of training and educational activities.
  • Contributes to educational program evaluation activities to ensure progress is being accomplished toward specified program objectives.
  • May conduct formal training or instruction in a classroom setting. 
  • Responsible for arranging event activities on the school campus or other locations.
  • May manage multiple education programs.
  • Assists in creating educational materials.
  • Leads curriculum development and refinement related to BCMBAR STEM magnet courses.
  • Develops lessons, provides in-class support, and assists BCMBAR teachers in improving and delivering lessons related to science and health.
  • Develops STEM learning experiences that integrate health sciences themes across all subject areas and all grade levels.
  • Conceptualizes, plans, and implements parent or family activities, in collaboration with BCMBAR School faculty and staff, to promote engagement in STEM.
  • Develops and implements an evaluation plan to examine the long-term impacts of the BCMBAR School’s health and science magnet program, including working with HISD to evaluate the effectiveness of special STEM-related initiatives at the school.
  • Serves as a member of the school leadership team, assists to develop student recruitment strategies for the Rusk magnet program.
  • Contributes to BCMBAR and Baylor College of Medicine's educational missions through participation on institutional committees and workgroups as assigned.  
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Master's or Doctoral degree, and at least one degree or major (undergraduate or graduate) in a science field, preferably biology.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in science teaching, curriculum development and/or teacher professional development.
  • Teacher certification (Secondary level).
  • Demonstrated experience with program evaluation and project reporting.
  • MS Office Software, including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. 
  • Applications of educational technology, such as tablets or smart boards, to teaching situations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse team members and lead new initiatives.
  • Strong attention to detail, and excellent administrative and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, identify needs and implement solutions, manage complex projects, and meet competing deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
