Description

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Instrumentation Designer executes project instrumentation design with moderate supervision and may oversee specific portions of a project. This role applies a solid understanding of design standards, codes, and project execution practices to deliver accurate, high-quality design work. The position reports to the Instrumentation Department Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain P&IDs, instrument indexes, and I/O lists.
  • Prepare detailed location plans, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and cable schedules.
  • Design tubing tray systems and medium-pressure tubing installations.
  • Prepare detailed instrument installation details and bill of materials, including tubing tray installations.
  • Review vendor documents and mechanical equipment packages for compliance with project requirements.
  • Conduct field verification and site inspections, documenting findings.
  • Coordinate design efforts with engineering leads and other disciplines.
  • Manage assigned budget and contribute to schedule development.
  • Support the management of instrumentation scope changes and material cost estimates.
  • Review design deliverables for accuracy and adherence to project standards.
  • Mentor junior designers and provide guidance on project deliverables.
  • Perform related duties as needed.

Qualifications

Qualifications / Education Requirements:

  • 4–9 years of applicable instrumentation design experience.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Drafting Technology, Instrumentation, or a related discipline.
  • Proficient with industry codes and design practices.
  • Understanding of control system modifications, wiring, and fusible loop systems.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs and contribute to client discussions on instrument scope.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Software:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, SPI, or Aveva E3D.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily conducted in an office environment but travel to project site locations for short-term field visits should be expected, as required, for project needs.
  • Field duties may require outdoor work in a plant or facility.
  • When on field assignment you may be required to work in a plant and/or shop areas around production machinery subject to varying temperatures and noise.
  • May be at more than one job site in a day and must be able to tolerate climate changes.
  • May be required to travel out of town on a periodic basis.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Reasonable Accommodation):

  • Ability to lift and carry up to ten (10) pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including sufficient clarity of speech, hearing, or other communication capabilities.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Sufficient visual acuity or other observational abilities to review documents, perform analysis, and conduct investigations.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to perform routine office tasks such as typing and using standard office equipment.
  • Sufficient mobility to perform office duties and travel to off-site locations as needed.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when visiting operational or field locations, as required by the safety department.
