Operations Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY

The Operations Supervisor directly supervises all aspects of the Transportation and Transload functions across an assigned area to meet: customer expectations, Company safety and quality standards, and employee productivity. Identifies and implements process improvements to increase safe efficiencies that meet and exceed Company objectives.

The Operations Supervisor demonstrates and adheres to the Company values of safety, honesty, ownership, respect and teamwork to ensure successful partnership with customers and employees that result in OmniTRAX’s continued success.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operation and the Federal Railroad Association (FRA)
  • Plan all train and engine activities including: crew scheduling, job scheduling, facilitating car loading/unloading, train make up/break up, safety and rules compliance, and customer interaction
  • Accountable for safety of all Transportation and Transload employees, including programs of: employee training, incident reporting/monitoring, rules compliance, and program/policy adjustment and/or development and implementation
  • Manage operational testing program: observe, document, and evaluate safe work practices per operating rules and act upon results
  • Meet tactical goals of the service plan: manage assets, report results, define problem areas and implement solutions; metrics include: asset utilization, execution to plan, and cost of quality and safety performance
  • Conduct regularly scheduled employee meetings and programs to emphasize safety: discuss mitigation of risks
  • Ensure new employees are adequately trained to perform work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Inspect, trouble shoot and repair equipment; provide preventative maintenance
  • Conduct inventory analysis; monitor and maintain various operational reports for internal use
  • Operate various types of equipment
  • Assist truck drivers with loading/unloading

OTHER DUTIES

  • May serve as a first responder to critical incidents
  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear required protective equipment such as: hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots or safety glasses
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, on-call and various shift work
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • No direct supervisory duties

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 3-5 years’ Railroad Operations experience
  • Supervisory and performance management experience
  • Self-motivated to meet or exceed goals
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Leadership and mentoring skills to develop high performance team
  • Read, comprehend and comply with published rules, procedures and manuals, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memo and other work-related information
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Write legibly to complete reports and other work documents
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills; effectively communicate with all level of employees and business associates in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills resulting in effective resolution
  • Professional integrity and accountability
  • Work in fast-paced collaborative environment

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • FRA Conductor Qualified

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Incident investigation and reporting experience
  • Experience working with employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • FRA Locomotive Engineer Certified

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather including: snow, rain, heat, and sub-freezing temps

TRAVEL

  • Daily travel as business requires during scheduled work hours
