Job Purpose

Employment Lawyer. Managing a caseload of primarily claims in the Employment Tribunal and also advisory work, as part of a small team of lawyers.

The role is titled Corporate Lawyer, as the substantive post also incorporates Education Law work.

Whilst a candidate willing to undertake education work would be a plus, the expectation is that the successful candidate will be an employment law expert.

Responsibilities

Provide expert legal advice on corporate, governance, constitutional, and local government law matters.

Draft, review, and negotiate legal agreements, contracts, policies, and other legal documentation.

Advise elected members, senior managers, and council departments on legal implications and risk management.

Support decision-making processes by preparing legal reports and attending committees, meetings, and hearings where required.

Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and council procedures.

Conduct legal research and provide clear, practical guidance on complex legal issues.

Manage a varied caseload independently while meeting deadlines and service standards.

Liaise with external solicitors, barristers, government bodies, and partner organisations where necessary.

Assist with governance matters including constitutional issues, delegations, and regulatory compliance.

Contribute to service improvement initiatives and the development of legal best practices.
