JOB.TITLE, Temporary positions available, based in Parramatta The Department of Customer Service is offering temporary positions as Principal Solicitor (Litigation) in its Legal team based at Parramatta. DCS Clerk Grade 11/12, $149,739 - $173,174+ super, commensurate with experience Up to two temporary positions available (until April 2027 and June 2027) Located in Parramatta Under the supervision of a Managing Lawyer, you will be responsible for providing high quality advice and representation to as part of the Legal team at the Department of Customer Service (DCS) and in particular servicing Subsidence Advisory NSW. DCS is a service provider, regulator and central agency of government. DCS has functions under the Coal Mine Subsidence Compensation Act 2017, which provides for a fair, efficient and sustainable compensation framework for dealing with the impacts of coal mine subsidence and the assessment and management of risks associated with subsidence resulting from coal mines. The role provides an opportunity to undertake a broad range of legal work. You will be providing high quality legal services to Subsidence Advisory NSW including both in providing advice in administrative law, interpretation and operation of legislation, and in appearing or instructing in civil litigation in the Land and Environment Court. Your key responsibilities will include: Providing timely, high quality legal advice on critical legal issues and civil matters on behalf of Subsidence Advisory NSW. Drafting documents including advices, pleadings, submissions and other court documents, preparing transactional documents, reviewing, drafting and negotiating documents, drafting briefing notes and correspondence. Conducting civil matters primarily in the Land and Environment Court and instructing counsel where appropriate. Analysing and interpreting complex legislation and participating in legislative projects. Contributing to the maintenance and update of systems, ensuring the integrity of data and consistency of legal services Assisting in developing and delivering guidance or training material to Subsidence Advisory NSW In this role you will be working in a fast paced environment with competing priorities. You will be a team player who is willing to hit the ground running, who can work independently, is client focused and able to develop innovative solutions. To be successful in this role you will demonstrate: Hold or eligible to hold a valid practising certificate in New South Wales Sound knowledge of legislative regulatory frameworks, and a strong background in providing advice as to the interpretation and operation of legislation. Significant experience in and knowledge of the conduct of civil legal proceedings, preferably in the Land and Environment Court. Proven negotiation, advocacy, stakeholder management, interpersonal and communication skills Strong analytical ability, lateral thinking and problem-solving skills including an ability to respond creatively and apply legal principles in a practical way.
