Description

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Position title: Food Bank Program Manager

Department: Student Services

Reports to: Senior Manager, Student Services

Supervises: Food Bank Assistant Coordinators, Food Bank Volunteers

Employee status: Permanent, Ongoing

Hours Per Week: 37.5

Compensation: $55,000 - $62,000 per annum with additional benefits package

Description

The AMS Services’ main mandate is to offer services and resources to the membership which are in significant demand and aim to further the well-being of the membership as a whole. The AMS Food Bank provides a free emergency supply of food for any student with a valid UBC card.

The Food Bank Program Manager manages and oversees all aspects of the AMS Food Bank, in close collaboration with the Senior Manager, Student Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the Food Bank is generally operating within the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful Service
  • Directly manage Food Bank Assistant Coordinators, including hiring, training, regular support and supervision, performance management, and termination
  • Conduct food purchasing and inventory, to ensure annual budget lasts for the full fiscal year and that there is sufficient food for all visitors daily. Work closely with wholesale food suppliers.
  • Manage the Food Bank budget. Closely monitor daily Food Bank usage and monthly expenses.
  • Oversee the volunteer program, including supporting the Assistant Coordinator, Volunteers in hiring, training, and managing the Food Bank’s 120 student volunteers.
  • Be the first point of contact for Food Bank clients about any concerns or suggestions. Conduct regular focus groups and other feedback programs and oversee the monthly client newsletter.
  • Ensure that the Food Bank is always clean and tidy and food is stored according to industry best practice
  • Produce annual end of year reports, including reports to sponsors.
  • Actively manage relationships with community partners and donors.
  • Work closely with the Senior Manager, Student Services in developing successful outreach initiatives to advertise and promote the Service
  • Support with the regular operations of the Food Bank, including supervising shifts during service hours, as well as donation pick-up and inventory shifts.
  • Provide on-call support for Food Bank operational hours when not directly supervising operations.
  • Post and attend regular office hours
  • Attend regular AMS Services team meetings
  • Coordinate and chair weekly Food Bank team meetings.
  • Develop and maintain the Food Bank Operations Manual
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Relevant post-secondary education, or a combination of training, education and experience
  • Minimum two years of experience in a social services role, with excellent demonstrated client support skills
  • Minimum one year of experience managing staff and volunteers
  • Class 5 driver’s license required for donation pick ups
  • Experience in food security and understanding of the social impacts of food insecurity is a significant asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate and work in a team environment as well as independently, and delegate tasks
  • Experience with large datasets and/or inventory and purchasing is an asset
  • Experience with budgeting, scheduling and administrative tasks
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office and Excel
