Role Overview

We are seeking a dynamic, results-driven, and client-focused Assistant Manager – Business Development (Laboratory Services) to drive revenue growth, develop new business opportunities, strengthen client relationships, and promote laboratory testing solutions across relevant industries.

The selected candidate will be responsible for identifying prospective customers, generating qualified leads, developing tailored laboratory service solutions, managing the complete sales cycle, and supporting the achievement of business development targets while maintaining high standards of customer service, integrity, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop new business opportunities for laboratory testing and related technical services.
  • Generate qualified leads through market research, referrals, networking, industry contacts, and direct customer engagement.
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of potential clients across food, agriculture, manufacturing, chemicals, and related sectors.
  • Promote laboratory testing services and clearly communicate their technical and commercial value to prospective customers.
  • Understand customer testing, quality, compliance, and certification requirements.
  • Develop suitable service proposals, quotations, presentations, and commercial solutions based on customer needs.
  • Manage the full business development cycle from lead generation and qualification through negotiation and closure.
  • Achieve agreed sales, revenue, customer-acquisition, and business-development targets.
  • Maintain and expand relationships with existing customers to support repeat business and account growth.
  • Conduct regular client visits, meetings, presentations, and business reviews.
  • Develop strong relationships with decision-makers, technical teams, quality professionals, manufacturers, and other key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with laboratory, technical, operations, customer service, and finance teams to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Follow up on quotations, proposals, samples, test requests, customer inquiries, and pending business opportunities.
  • Ensure customer requirements are communicated accurately to internal technical and laboratory teams.
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activities, regulatory developments, and emerging customer requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce additional testing, inspection, certification, and related services.
  • Maintain accurate customer records, sales activities, opportunities, and forecasts using the relevant CRM or reporting system.
  • Prepare regular sales reports, pipeline updates, market insights, and management presentations.
  • Support marketing campaigns, technical seminars, industry events, and promotional initiatives.
  • Deliver a high standard of customer service and support the timely resolution of customer concerns.
  • Comply with health, safety, environmental, quality, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional conduct, confidentiality, integrity, and ethical business practices.
  • Travel across the country to meet customers and support business-development activities.
  • Work extended hours when necessary to meet customer and operational requirements.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science and Technology, Agriculture, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in the Testing, Inspection and Certification industry, laboratory services, sales, or business development.
  • Experience in Sales and Marketing, Food Manufacturing, or Manufacturing Operations will be an advantage.
  • Previous experience promoting laboratory testing, quality-assurance, inspection, or technical services will be preferred.
  • Proven ability to identify new customers, generate leads, and convert business opportunities.
  • Existing industry contacts, leads, or referral networks that can support new business development will be an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of customer requirements within food, agriculture, manufacturing, chemical, or related industries.
  • Ability to work within a target-driven environment and performance-related incentive structure.
  • Strong business-development, negotiation, presentation, and customer-relationship-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Ability to explain scientific or technical services clearly to commercial and non-technical customers.
  • Good analytical, planning, market-research, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Hands-on proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout Sri Lanka.
  • Valid driving or riding licence will be required.
  • Self-organized, enthusiastic, proactive, and capable of working with minimum supervision.
  • Disciplined, accountable, and able to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong commitment to following HSE guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
  • Ability to manage multiple customer opportunities, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when required.
