Description
About the team
Symetra's AI Enablement team is a fast-growing team of builders inside our Data Analytics organization. Our goal is to accelerate AI adoption across the company in two ways: by building shared platforms, tooling, and patterns that let other teams effectively integrate AI into their workflows, and by shipping AI-powered applications for the most important use cases.
We work in small, cross-functional teams, build with the people who use what we make, and move fast. Our first product in production, docstream, is an AI-powered document-processing platform that currently supports several of Symetra's back-end operational processes. We plan to continue to iterate on docstream and to build out other products using the same modular architecture, integrating third-party products where it makes sense.
About the role
As a Lead Analytics Engineer, you'll design and build the data platform our AI products are built on: the storage and pipelines for the documents and other unstructured data our AI applications use. You'll shape what we build, choose the right tools, set the patterns, and mentor the engineers building alongside you.
What you will do
- Design and build the data platform and pipelines that feed our AI products.
- Determine how to store and serve the data our AI applications need, using an OLTP database, object storage, or our Snowflake data warehouse.
- Solve data integration problems across our many structured and unstructured sources.
- Partner with the software engineers building our AI products so the data platform fits what they need.
- Mentor other engineers and act as the technical lead for the data platform.
Who You Are
- An expert data or analytics engineer (typically 8+ years) who has designed and built data platforms.
- Strong data engineering with SQL and Python: pipelines, data modeling, and integrating structured and unstructured data.
- Experience evaluating, choosing, and standing up data infrastructure.
- Advanced problem-solving and communication; excited to work with other engineering teams and business stakeholders who are your internal customers.
- Use AI coding agents effectively in your day-to-day work, with the judgment to know when to use them and when not to.
Nice to Haves
- Building data pipelines for LLM-powered applications (RAG, embeddings, vector stores).
- Working with documents and unstructured data at scale (object storage, data lakes).
- Orchestration with Dagster or Airflow.
Why Work at Symetra
Here’s what some of our employees have to say about why they work at Symetra:
““I was referred to Symetra by a family friend who’s been with the company for years—and I’m so glad I took their advice. Symetra truly puts its people first. I’ve always felt supported, not micromanaged, and that trust has helped me grow. I started in an entry-level position and have worked my way up to Unit Manager by continuously learning and expanding my skills. It’s a place that believes in its employees and invests in their success.” - Morgan D., Sr. Unit Manager
“"Symetra will spoil you. There aren't many companies that will put as much effort into you being a success as Symetra. The culture will challenge you but simultaneously put you at ease. Failure is seen as integral to the learning process so there is less reason to be fearful of it." - Kerry S., Sr. Systems Analyst
