Non-paid Summer Student
Position Summary
Durham Children’s Aid Society is seeking a post-secondary student to join our Finance and Accounting team as an Accounting Placement Student. This opportunity offers hands-on experience in financial operations and administrative functions that are essential to the success of our organization.
The student will receive practical exposure to the field of accounting, with tasks including processing accounts payable and accounts receivable, preparing government rebate applications (e.g., GST, Children’s Special Allowance), reconciling petty cash and vendor statements, and assisting with balance sheet reconciliations. Additional responsibilities include producing journal entries, preparing Health Coverage applications for children in care of the Society, performing computer data input and maintaining accurate financial records, documenting internal processes and procedures, and providing administrative support, including cross-departmental collaboration.
This placement is designed to help students deepen and apply their accounting knowledge, enhance their understanding of financial systems in a non-profit environment, and develop competencies that are transferable to any professional setting.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution (college or university) with a focus on Accounting or Finance.
- Basic knowledge of word processing programs.
- Working knowledge of Excel with excellent keyboarding skills and data entry experience.
- Available to work in-person at the DCAS office during the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

- Candidates must undergo and successfully pass a background check before an offer of employment may be made. Proof of education is required.
