The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University.
The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution.
In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students.
Job Summary
The Director of Communication, under the direction of the President, will primarily be responsible to work alongside the director of marketing to ensure consistency in two-way communication to students. This position will will work closely with the director of marketing to advise on campaigns and assist with communications responses and marketing campaigns. This role will also record instances of the ams' appearance in local, regional, and national media outlets and develop strategies to maximize positive exposure for the society. The Director of Communication must possess ability to plan, organize, and effectively present ideas and concepts to groups and ability to adapt to new technology.

Job Duties
- Work alongside the Director of Marketing to ensure consistency in two-way communication to students
- Will work closely with the Director of Marketing to advise on campaigns and assist with communications responses and marketing campaigns
- Record instances of the AMS' appearance in local, regional, and national media outlets and develop strategies to maximize positive exposure for the society
- Lead projects of high importance or platform initiatives as assigned by the Executive and manage their completion
- Will support Executives in writing speeches and managing appearances
- Provide guidance to ensure coordination and communication of messages or news to both internal and external audiences
- Oversee the preparation of reports, presentations, websites, and press releases
- Read and edit copy to be published or broadcast to detect and correct errors in spelling, grammar, and syntax, and shorten or lengthen copy as space or time requires
- Manage day-to-day media relations and media requests for brand and corporate issues
- Assist in developing, implementing, and measuring external and internal social media based communication plans
- Analyse departmental operations and identify areas requiring improvement
- Plan and co-ordinate activities of staff and assure production deadlines are met
- Develop a departmental goal plan which will serve as the framework for the annual budget prepared in collaboration with the accounting department and approved by the President
- Monitor actual results against the approved budget in the organization accounting system (Business Central) each month, to track performance
- Attend and fully participate in all in person and virtual meetings
- Maintain consistent communication with all relevant stakeholders responding to e-mails in a timely manner
- Complete a thorough transition process with the incoming manager that includes one on one meetings and a transition manual
- Participate as an observer at AMS Assembly and the AMS Board of Directors and provide advice on strategic issues as the need arises
- Determine staffing requirements for the administration department and oversee the hiring of staff
- Ensure that all employees comply with company policies, procedures, and ethical standards
- Administer disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures
- Ensure employees have clear goals and are aware of expectations
- Ensure that employees adhere to all health and safety regulations
- Provide informal feedback and coaching to staff on an ongoing basis
