Position Summary

This position oversees the Department of Campus Safety Training Division and is responsible for the management of compliance and administrative aspects related to the Department of Campus Safety including the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, the Department’s Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) nationally and internationally recognized accreditation program, and other regulatory compliance issues. The position reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Campus Safety.
This position is responsible for overseeing the coordination and preparation of the Department’s quarterly and annual reports and production of the annual security and fire safety report under the Jeanne Clery Act. This position oversees the Department’s CALEA ( program and requires extensive experience in writing and documenting policies and procedures that meet accreditation standards.
The position provides leadership to the Department of Campus Safety by directly supervising the Sergeant of the Training Division and promoting alignment with CALEA standards and by applying project management skills to large scale projects, providing solutions for issues in implementation and leveraging campus relationships to ensure successful completion.

Essential Functions

  • Manages the Department of Campus Safety and University of Denver’s compliance under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act.
  • Supervises the Training Division, providing guidance to the Sergeant of the Training Division on the training program as it relates to CALEA standards, Clery compliance and other regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for the management of the Department’s written directive system, to include writing directives, SOP’s and other policy/procedures associated with the Department’s administrative and operational functions.
  • Responsible for the management of the Department’s CALEA accreditation program. Serves as the Department’s Accreditation
  • Manager for re- accreditation processes, including managing accreditation tasks assigned to senior staff and Department personnel and managing proofs of compliance for assessments.
  • Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for assigned programs; recommends and administers written directives and procedures.
  • Oversees records maintenance, records of crime, incident, property, and submits required requests to appropriate outside agencies; reports crime statistics and security information as required by the Jeanne Clery Campus Clery Act.
  • May serve as project manager on special projects within the Department or as a Department representative when working with University partners.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the field of law enforcement and campus security; incorporates new developments.
  • Oversees the Department’s Professional Standards Division.
  • Manages other administration functions within the Department, provides guidance on HR related matters, completing annual and quarterly reports for the Chief. Assists in preparation of annual and quarterly reports to the University’s Senior Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs.
  • Works to assure Department practices are in congruence with CALEA standards and with Department directives and procedures.
  • Participates in Department recruiting and accreditation efforts.
  • Adheres to all Department and University policies, procedures, directives, rules and regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals for review at the University senior management level.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, clients, customers, faculty and staff as well as the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, electronic, graphical, or numeric form. Ability to self-direct own work.

  • Has direct experience and a working knowledge of business computer databases, hardware, networks, and software.
  • Physical and mental aptitude to accept and successfully complete specialized training.
  • Thorough knowledge of simple set-up, adjustment, and operational procedures of work-related equipment.
  • Knowledge of the use of records management systems and basic office software (Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, etc.)

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent credit hours with an emphasis in Criminal Justice, Business Management/Administration or closely related fields; or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • 3+ years of progressive administrative experience
  • 3+ years of experience in the management of personnel.
  • 2+ years of experience working with an accreditation process.
  • Knowledge and experience in writing policy and procedures that meet accreditation standards
  • Strong knowledge of basic office software systems (Microsoft Windows, Adobe, Outlook, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Records Management Systems (RMS).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado drivers license and be insurable under University guidelines; or, obtain a valid
  • Colorado’s driver’s license within the required time frame.
  • Must pass a complete background check to include criminal, motor vehicle report and verification of employment and education.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen administered by a University approved facility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in the management of personnel.
  • Experience working in a Law Enforcement Agency.
  • Experience as an administrator of records management software.
  • Knowledge and strong experience in writing policy and procedures that meet accreditation standards.
  • Management of a CALEA accreditation program or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive understanding of laws and regulations affecting institutions of higher education as well as non-sworn campus Law
  • Enforcement Agencies, including but not limited, to FERPA and The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act.

Working Environment

This position primarily works in an office environment; however, the position may occasionally be called upon to work different hours or at locations away from the immediate office. Unexpected interruptions occur frequently; and stress level is moderate. The noise level is usually quiet to moderate. There are occasions where the employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.

Physical Activities

Minimal physical effort is required. The employee is regularly required to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time and may also be required to lift 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 12.
Salary Rate:
The salary rate for this position is $92,000.
