Description

Job duties:
Conduct legal research on cases, depositions, opinions, and reports required to complete trial and appellate litigation. Prepare correspondence, memoranda, summonses, complaints, motions, subpoenas, and other legal documents. Interview clients and witnesses. Develop strategy, arguments, and testimony in preparation for presentation of cases. Draft legal briefs and motions, prepare for and take depositions of fact and expert witnesses, and participate in trials (both with and without a jury). Prepare and file briefs, motions, and appeals in state and federal courts. Present oral argument to both district court and appellate court judges. Examine witnesses at trial or other evidentiary hearings. Review and interpret the Constitution, statutes, decisions, regulations, and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies to determine implications for cases. Analyze probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents. Examine the law and the facts to formulate recommendations about the advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuits. Evaluate findings and develops strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases. Negotiate settlements of civil disputes. Confer with colleagues with specialties in appropriate areas to establish and verify bases for legal proceedings. Manage general litigation matters and at least portions of large complex litigation matters. Provide advice to clients on the best options to protect their legal interests. Perform special projects as assigned.


Requirements:
Must have a Juris Doctor degree from a top-tier law school (i.e., Top 20 law school based on U.S. News & World Report rankings). At least one documented distinction in law school, such as serving as an editor on a law review/law journal or Trial Advocacy or Moot Court competition award. Must have prior full-time employment as a judicial law clerk/intern for either a federal district or federal appellate court judge for at least 12 months. Must be licensed to practice law in Washington, D.C
