POSITION SUMMARY
The Steel Project Manager serves as the primary company representative responsible for the overall direction, execution, and financial outcome of structural steel projects. Reporting to an Operations Manager or Division Manager, this individual manages the project team and oversees all activities related to contract administration, change orders, submittals, procurement, budget and schedule management, and project closeout.
The Steel Project Manager ensures projects are completed safely, profitably, on time, and to the highest quality standards. This role requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and a customer-focused mindset to build and maintain long-term client relationships.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Financial Management
- Develops and manages project budgets, including GMP or Lump Sum proposals.
- Understands and adheres to contract requirements (bonds, fees, schedules, reporting, and costs).
- Prepares and submits accurate monthly cost reports and financial projections.
- Identifies and mitigates project risks, ensuring compliance with Steelworks’ policies and procedures.
Preconstruction and Procurement
- Partners with preconstruction to prepare and review cost estimates, including general conditions and contingencies.
- Ensures accuracy and quality of budget estimates delivered to clients.
- Manages subcontracting process: scope reviews, pricing, scope of work development, contract execution, and distribution.
Project Start-up and Scheduling
- Conducts thorough handoff meetings from preconstruction to operations.
- Collaborates with superintendents, subcontractors, and suppliers to develop and manage construction schedules.
- Establishes a project responsibilities matrix and ensures all resources (personnel, equipment, and materials) are in place.
- Reviews contract documents with stakeholders to ensure project success.
Project Administration, Operations, and Close-out
- Oversees daily project administration and operations. Leads weekly project team meetings to align goals and resolve issues.
- Maintains project schedules, milestone tracking, and close-out checklists.
- Ensures compliance with safety standards, specifications, and Steelworks’ quality guidelines.
- Manages change proposals and coordinates with leadership for owner approval.
- Leads the closeout process, ensuring financial obligations are settled and the client receives a fully completed project.
- Establishes effective communication with subcontractors, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure timely project delivery.
Customer and Business Development
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with clients, design teams, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Ensures customer expectations are met or exceeded.
- Seeks opportunities to grow repeat business by delivering high-quality project outcomes.
Leadership and Team Development
- Serves as a role model, demonstrating Steelworks’ values, purpose, and vision.
- Provides mentorship and career development opportunities for Project Engineers, Assistant Project Managers, and other team members.
- Encourages professional growth and continuous improvement within the team.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Majority of work will be performed at job sites, often in office trailers or temporary field offices.
- Requires the use of personal protective equipment in accordance with Steelworks’ safety standards.
- May require travel or relocation to project sites based on business needs.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred. Equivalent field experience may be considered.
- 6+ years of progressive construction experience with at least 4 years in leadership roles, preferably within structural steel or industrial projects.
- Experience managing projects of significant size and complexity.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software (e.g., Procore, CMiC, or similar).
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
